Summary Statistics Study Lab

A distribution is summarized by a measure of center (mean or median) and a measure of spread (standard deviation, IQR, or range). Edit the data, drag one value far out, and watch which statistics move and which ones resist. Every calculation is worked out step by step.

1. Calculate and compare

Type numbers separated by commas or spaces, or start from a preset.

x̄ = Σx ÷ n s = √( Σ(x − x̄)² ÷ (n − 1) ) IQR = Q₃ − Q₁

Mean and median

Quartiles and IQR

Standard deviation, one row per value

Change the units: linear transformations

Converting units means every value becomes new = a + b × old. Adding a shifts center but not spread. Multiplying by b scales both.

Before and after

2. Key ideas

Center

Mean vs. median

The mean is the balance point: add the values and divide by n. The median is the middle value of the ordered data. With an odd n it is one data value; with an even n it is the average of the middle two.

Resistance

Which stats resist outliers?

The median and IQR are resistant: one extreme value barely moves them. The mean, standard deviation, and range are not resistant, because they use the actual size of every value.

Skew

The mean follows the tail

In a right-skewed distribution the long tail pulls the mean above the median. In a left-skewed distribution the mean is below the median. When the distribution is roughly symmetric the two are close.

Spread

Standard deviation

The standard deviation is roughly the typical distance of the values from the mean. It is never negative, and it equals 0 only when every value is the same. Its units match the data's units.

Quartiles

Q₁, Q₃, and the IQR

Q₁ is the median of the lower half and Q₃ the median of the upper half. The IQR = Q₃ − Q₁ is the range of the middle 50% of the data. An outlier is any value below Q₁ − 1.5·IQR or above Q₃ + 1.5·IQR.

Pairing

Pick a matching pair

Report the mean with the standard deviation when the distribution is roughly symmetric with no outliers. Report the median with the IQR when it is skewed or has outliers.

4. On the FRQ

How to earn the points

  • Name the statistic and give its value with units and context: "The median commute time is 22 minutes."
  • Interpret the standard deviation as a typical distance: "The commute times typically vary by about 8.4 minutes from the mean of 24.1 minutes."
  • Justify your choice of center: "The median is a better measure of center because the distribution is strongly right-skewed and the median is resistant to the high outlier."
  • Show the outlier rule with numbers: "Q₃ + 1.5(IQR) = 30 + 1.5(12) = 48. Since 61 > 48, 61 is an outlier."
  • Calculator work alone ("1-Var Stats") earns no credit. Write the values you found with labels.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to sort before finding the median or quartiles.
  • Including the median in both halves when n is odd. The AP method leaves it out of both.
  • Saying "the standard deviation is the average distance." Say "typical" or "about," and include context and units.
  • Thinking adding a constant changes the standard deviation. Shifting every value by the same amount moves the center only.
  • Calling a value an outlier because it "looks far away." Use the 1.5 × IQR rule and show the fences.
